Create Your Free AlpacaRelay Account

Start by signing up for AlpacaRelay at no cost—no credit card required. Visit the AlpacaRelay homepage and click Sign Up. Enter your email address, create a password, and verify your email. Once verified, you'll land in the AlpacaRelay dashboard. This account is your hub for connecting SendGrid, mapping contact data, and building quality-scored email campaigns. The entire signup process takes under 2 minutes.

Generate and Copy Your SendGrid API Key

Log in to your SendGrid account and navigate to Settings > API Keys. Click Create API Key and name it 'AlpacaRelay Integration' for easy identification. Select Full Access permissions—AlpacaRelay needs read/write access to sync contact data, retrieve template information, and monitor delivery metrics. Copy the API key immediately (SendGrid displays it only once). Store it temporarily in a secure location—you'll paste it into AlpacaRelay in the next step. This key is the secure bridge between SendGrid and AlpacaRelay; it does not expose your SendGrid password.

Connect Your SendGrid Account in AlpacaRelay Settings

In your AlpacaRelay dashboard, navigate to Settings > Integrations > SendGrid. Click the Connect button. You'll see a field labeled 'SendGrid API Key'—paste the API key you copied in Step 2. AlpacaRelay immediately validates the key by making a test request to SendGrid's API. Within 10-15 seconds, you'll see a green confirmation: 'SendGrid connected successfully.' At this point, AlpacaRelay has read-only access to your SendGrid contact lists, custom fields, and existing templates. No data syncs until you proceed to Step 4.

Map Your Contact Data and Select Sync Fields

Once connected, AlpacaRelay displays a Data Mapping interface showing your SendGrid contact fields (email, first_name, last_name, custom fields, etc.). Select which fields you want AlpacaRelay to read for email personalization and quality scoring. For ecommerce workflows, we recommend: email address, first name, last name, purchase history, cart abandonment status, and any custom ecommerce fields (product_viewed, last_purchase_date, customer_tier). Deselect fields you don't need. This configuration determines what data AlpacaRelay's AI can access when generating and scoring emails. Click Save Mapping. Syncing begins immediately via webhook—new contacts or field changes in SendGrid appear in AlpacaRelay within 60 seconds.

Create Your First Quality-Scored Email Campaign

Return to the AlpacaRelay dashboard and click Create Campaign. Select SendGrid as your channel. Choose a campaign type—for ecommerce, start with Abandoned Cart Recovery. AlpacaRelay's AI analyzes your synced contact data and generates subject lines, preview text, and email body copy optimized for your audience. Each generated email is automatically scored across the 8-Dimension Email Quality Framework (Deliverability, Mobile Render, CTA Clarity, Personalization Depth, Visual Hierarchy, Copy Effectiveness, Brand Consistency, and Structural Compliance). Review the draft email and its Email Quality Score (EQS). If the score is 8/10 or higher, approve the campaign. Click Send via SendGrid—your email delivers through SendGrid's infrastructure, and AlpacaRelay continues to track engagement and quality metrics.
