How to Connect AlpacaRelay to Zapier
Create Your Free AlpacaRelay Account
Visit alpacarelay.com and sign up for a free account using your email address. No credit card is required. You'll have immediate access to the dashboard, integrations hub, and email builder. This account is where all your Zapier-triggered campaigns will live and be quality-scored before delivery. During onboarding, you'll be prompted to connect your first platform—select Zapier from the integration options, or skip this step and return to Settings > Integrations > Zapier when you're ready.
Authorize AlpacaRelay in Zapier Using OAuth
Log into your Zapier account and create a new Zap. Search for AlpacaRelay in the action library. When you select AlpacaRelay as your action app, Zapier will prompt you to connect your account. Click 'Connect a New Account' and you'll be redirected to AlpacaRelay's OAuth authorization screen. Review the requested permissions (AlpacaRelay requests read and write access to manage your contacts and email campaigns) and click 'Authorize.' You'll be redirected back to Zapier with a confirmed connection. This OAuth handshake is one-time only and takes approximately 60 seconds. Your Zapier account now has secure, token-based access to AlpacaRelay's API and can trigger email sends without storing your password.
Map Your Trigger Data and Select or Create an Email Template
In your Zapier action configuration, map the trigger data (e.g., student email, course name, enrollment date from your LMS, form submission platform, or CRM) to AlpacaRelay contact fields. Zapier displays the available fields from your trigger app on the left and AlpacaRelay's contact schema on the right. Common education mappings include: Student Email → Contact Email, Student Name → First Name, Course ID → Custom Field (Course_Name), Enrollment Date → Custom Field (Enrollment_Date). After mapping, select whether you want to use an existing AlpacaRelay email template or create a new one directly in Zapier. If creating new, Zapier's AlpacaRelay action includes a template selector that shows all your saved campaigns. Select one and proceed. If you haven't created any campaigns yet, complete step 4 first, then return to your Zapier configuration.
Create Your First Quality-Scored Email Campaign in AlpacaRelay
Return to AlpacaRelay's dashboard and navigate to Campaigns > Create New. Select your email template (education-focused templates include welcome series, course enrollment confirmation, and assignment reminder layouts) or start with a blank template. Use the drag-and-drop editor to add your content, personalization tokens (e.g., {student_first_name}, {course_name}), and a clear call-to-action. For Zapier integrations in education, common campaigns include: welcome emails triggered on student signup, course enrollment confirmations with syllabus links, assignment deadline reminders, and post-course survey requests. Before publishing, the system automatically scores your email across the 8-Dimension Email Quality Framework (Deliverability, Mobile Render, CTA Clarity, Personalization Depth, Visual Hierarchy, Copy Effectiveness, Brand Consistency, and Structural Compliance). Your email receives an Email Quality Score (EQS) from 1-10. Save and publish once you see your score. This campaign is now available for selection in your Zapier Zaps.
Activate Quality Scoring and Test Your First Zap
Return to your Zapier Zap configuration and confirm that your AlpacaRelay action is set to 'Send Email' with your published campaign selected. Review the data mapping one final time to ensure student emails, names, and any course-specific data are correctly routed. Click 'Test & Review' to trigger a test send to your own email address. Zapier will simulate the trigger event and send you the email exactly as Zapier-connected contacts will receive it. Open the test email on mobile and desktop to verify rendering quality—this confirms the Mobile Render dimension of your EQS score is functioning correctly. Once you've verified the email looks correct, turn on the Zap by toggling the switch to 'On.' Your integration is now live. Every email sent through this Zap is automatically quality-scored by AlpacaRelay's EQF before delivery. You can monitor performance in AlpacaRelay's Insights dashboard, which displays open rates, click-through rates, and per-email EQS scores. Education campaigns with EQS scores of 8+/10 typically see 25-32% higher engagement than campaigns scoring below 6/10, based on AlpacaRelay analysis across 200k+ higher education emails.
